Join us, (weather permitting) this Friday, April 21, at Rocky Mount’s City Lake Park for the annual STATEWIDE STAR PARTY. The Statewide Star Party at City Lake and Saturday’s Solar Viewing at City Lake are just two of over 50 different observing events taking place around the state which are part of the NC Science Festival! Hosted by the staff of the Imperial Centre’s Cummins Planetarium and volunteers from the Tar River Astronomy Club, we will have an array of several telescopes set up and pointed at a variety of celestial targets including the Beehive and Pleiades star clusters, and the giant planet Jupiter and four of its largest moons. This is the best opportunity this year to observe Jupiter, as it is now at its closest approach to Earth. Observing gets underway at sunset. But we will be on hand around 7:00 PM to set up and conduct some free daytime astronomy activities! Besides stargazing with telescopes, we will have free April Sky Charts, constellation tours, and other activities.
