Arts Education Programs

Fall arts classes and workshops are here! New to the arts or have experience? There is something for everyone–kids, adults, and families. Our teaching artists are excited to work with a range of students, support all levels of experience, and experiment with creativity together!

All programs take place in the Arts Education Building, unless otherwise noted.

Ongoing Programs

Family Sundays

Every Sunday, September 8-December 15 (no class October 27 and November 10)
2–4pm
All ages and up with accompanying adults
Drop into the gallery for art making, interactive play, gallery sketching, or go on your own exhibition tour! All materials are provided. Registration is not required, drop-ins of all ages and up with accompanying adults welcome.

Yoga

Tuesdays, September 17–December 10

Age 15+
Bring your yoga mat and get ready to unwind. Registration is not required, drop-ins of age 15+ welcome. Limited to 20 participants.

Ballet Fit Fusion

Saturdays, September 7–November 9 (no class October 5)
10–11am
Age 18+
Join us for a ballet-based workout concentrating on core stability, strength, and balance. Most classes are practiced in the center of the floor and at the ballet barre. No prior dance experience necessary.

Mommy+Me Arts

Wednesdays, October 9–November 20
10:30–11:30am
Age 2–8
Explore a variety of art materials, experience new textures, improve fine motor skills, and enjoy being creative together. Each class introduces children and caregivers to a story, art materials and creativity. All materials are provided.
Pre-registration is suggested, drop-ins welcome. Limited to 15 participants.

NEW: Clay Arts Afterschool

Fridays, October 11–November 22
3:30-6:30pm
Age 7–13
Enjoy experimenting with clay! Learn the techniques of construction and forming through wheel throwing and handbuilding. All materials included. No prior experience needed.

Jazz

Saturdays, September 7–November 9 (no class October 5)
11:30am–12:30pm
Age 18+
Join us for a new traditional jazz class for adults! Each class includes warm-up, rhythmic exercises, and floor stretches. Study jazz technique and learn dance combinations and routines. Basic experience is a plus but not required.

Modern

Saturdays, September 7–November 9 (no class October 5)
1:30–2:30pm
Age 17+
Express emotion and storytelling through movement! Explore a range of modern dance techniques while increasing strength, flexibility, and freedom of movement. Be free in movement and interpretive style through exercises and choreography in center floor. Basic experience is a plus but not required.

Ballet: Ballet Basics

Mondays & Tuesdays, September 9–October 1
4–5pm
Age 3–6
Designed for both boys and girls as a pre-curser to the traditional Ballet. Have fun while using props and learning coordination, balance, rhythm, along with beginning choreography to be performed on the last class! No experience necessary.

Adult Ballet: Ballet Basics

For adults wishing to begin the study of classical ballet! Practice barre exercises focusing on alignment, core and leg strength, and flexibility. Explore center work with elementary steps, simple jumps, as well as turns. No experience necessary.

Handbuilding in Clay

Mondays, September 16–November 4
9am–12pm
Age 12+
Pinch, coil, and slab! Experiment with handbuilding techniques to create a range of sculptural and functional clay pieces. Practice wedging, construction techniques, finishing and glazing during an 8-week class. Limited free recycled clay available or each bag of clay: $20. No prior experience needed.
Registration is required by September 13. Limited to 20 participants.

Wheel Throwing

Tuesdays & Thursdays, September 17–October 31
9am–12pm
Age 13+
Perfect for the complete beginner to learn the basics of clay. Practice wedging, centering, trimming, and glazing over 7 weeks. All are welcome to work at their own pace and make a variety of cylinders and bowls. Limited free recycled clay available or each bag of clay: $20. No prior experience needed.
Registration is required by September 13. Limited to 12 participants.

Painting in Color

Tuesdays, September 17–November 19
5:30–8:30pm
Age 14+
Learn about color theory, mixing, and application techniques over 12 weeks. All are encouraged to work directly from observation and experiment with size and proportion of pictures, composition and different styles of working. All materials provided or bring your own tools and sketchbook; no experience necessary, basic drawing skills are welcome.

Drawing from Life

Thursdays, September 19–November 14

Age 12+
Practice the art of drawing from life! Experiment with techniques and discovering how to represent what you see through studies in contour drawing, perspective, positive/negative space, and value. Over 10 weeks, students develop a deeper understanding of capturing any subject as an artist or designer. Beginner to intermediate age 12+. All materials included or bring your own tools and sketchbook.

Registration Guidelines

Registration is required for all fee based classes and workshops, unless otherwise noted. Payment is required at time of registration. Participants are not considered enrolled until payment has been made. Enroll online, or by calling 252-972-1266, or by visiting the Imperial Centre at 270 Gay Street.

Parks & Recreation Refund Policy:
Participants receive an 85% refund when canceling prior to a class/workshop start date; a refund of 50% is issued for cancellations within the first week of class; no refund is issued for cancellations after two class meetings.
