Perhaps you’ve seen the flags on utility poles in downtown Rocky Mount. Or, maybe you’ve noticed the city’s 150th anniversary logo proudly displayed beside the state and American flags in front of City Hall. That’s because the city of Rocky Mount is happy to celebrate another milestone-150 years since its founding as a town in 1867.
The logo conveys the city’s rich history because its focal point is the Rocky Mount Mills. Now generating coverage due to its renovation and brand as a brewery incubator, Rocky Mount Mills was initially one of the first cotton mills in the state.
But, there’s more to the city’s 150 years, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s visit to Booker T. Washington High School in 1962 where he uttered his prelude to the famous “I Have a Dream” speech; Dr. Booker T. Washington’s visit to the area in 1910; Rocky Mount’s leadership in the tobacco industry, along with the establishment and later prosperous growth of the city’s banks.
50 years ago, a time capsule was buried by community members at Braswell Park. Unfortunately, the majority of contents did not survive its time underground and experienced significant water damage. Salvaged items represented how important the 100th anniversary was to the community. Recovered items were displayed at the Independence Celebration on July 3rd and will be displayed at the Imperial Centre from August 1st to December 31st, 2017.
Description of Project: The city will pack and seal a time capsule to celebrate its 150th year as an incorporated town/city on November 3rd during the Imperial Centre’s First Friday event. The Time Capsule will be opened in 50 years. The Time Capsule Committee is seeking entries from interested citizens of the City of Rocky Mount. To submit an idea for consideration please fill out the entry form and email to CityofRockyMount150@gmail.com.
Deadline for Entry Form submission is September 30, 2017. You will be notified on or before October 15th, 2017 if your entry has been selected for inclusion in the Time Capsule. At that time, you will be given the details on how & where to bring your Time Capsule item. The Capsule will be sealed on November 3rd, 2017.
