Artist Opportunities

Solo, Group, and Traveling Exhibition Proposals

Visual artists may submit proposals for exhibition throughout the year. Submissions must contain a minimum of 10-15 digital images, artist resume, and an artist statement. Our exhibits rotate each Spring (January – April), Summer (May – August), and Fall (September – December). Exhibitions are selected and curated 2-3 years in advance. We are accepting submissions for our Handcrafted Juried Art Show at the Maria V. Howard Arts Center! 

Deadline for submissions: Dec. 12 at 11:59 p.m. 

This year’s juror, Jessica Dupuis received her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BFA with a concentration in ceramics and print media from Alfred University. She is an Associate Professor of Art – Ceramics & A.D. Gallery Director at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. To find out more about the juror, visit her website at jessicadupuis.com 

Awards: 

  • $1000 – Acquisition Award 
  • $300 – First Place 
  • $200 – Second Place 
  • $100 – Third Place 

Acquisition Award: The work selected for the Acquisition Award will become part of the Arts Center’s Permanent Collection. Any artist not willing to accept the $1,000 award must submit a written statement to declare their work not eligible for this award. This statement must be submitted at the time of entry. Works not for sale will be ineligible for the award. 

Media: Traditional and non-traditional craft media including but not limited to: ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, paper, or any combination of craft media. 

There is no entry fee. Open to all US artists 18 years of age or older working in any media except installation. Work must be original and executed within the past three years. Work must not have been previously exhibited at the Arts Center. Entry in this exhibit establishes an agreement on the part of the artist to all conditions listed in the prospectus

National Juried Exhibitions

The Maria V. Howard Arts Center hosts three national juried exhibitions annually. To receive notifications of Call for Entries, please sign up to our email list (form located on this page). Handcrafted

The prospectus for this innovative craft exhibition is below and the exhibition will be held January 13 through April 16, 2023.

Awards:

    • $1000 – Acquisition Award

Sculpture Salmagundi

The prospectus for this annual outdoor sculpture exhibition is released in June. The exhibition is installed in October, opens in November, and remains on outdoor display for one year.
This year’s deadline for entry is September 13 th. The art reception and announcement of winners will be on November 17 th , 2-4 p.m.

Juror: This year’s juror is artist, Jim Gallucci. Juror, Jim Gallucci, a graduate of LeMoyne College (BA, English 1973) and Syracuse University (BFA, Art 1974 and MFA, Sculpture 1976), has been a sculptor for over 30 years. Awards:

    • $1,000 honorarium is awarded for each sculpture juried into the show.
    • $1,000 Best In Show Award selected by the juror.

Media: Outdoor/Public sculpture with the ability to withstand weather and public interaction for one year.

Location: Works will be displayed on the grounds of the Imperial Centre, Downtown, and in the Parks Systems in Rocky Mount, NC.

Eligibility: Open to all U.S. artists 18 years of age or older. Work must be original and executed within the past three years. Work must not have been previously exhibited at the Arts Center. Entry in this exhibit establishes an agreement on the part of the artist to all conditions listed in the prospectus.

Entry Fee: There is no entry fee. You may submit up to three pieces for consideration.

Juried Art Show (JAS)

Submissions for this multi-media fine arts exhibition will open mid-January through mid-February with the exhibition being held in May – August 2023.

Awards:

    • $1,500 – Acquisition Award
    • $800 – First Place
    • $500 – Second Place
    • $250 – Third Place
    • $250 – Best Rocky Mount Area Artist

Acquisition Award: The work selected for the Acquisition Award will become part of the Arts Center’s Permanent Collection. Any artist not willing to accept the $1,500 award must indicate such on their entry form to declare their work not eligible for this award. Works not for sale will be ineligible for the award.

Media: Open to all media except installations.

Eligibility: Open to all U.S. artists 18 years of age or older. Work must be original and executed within the past three years. Work must not have been previously exhibited at the Arts Center. Entry in this exhibit establishes an agreement on the part of the artist to all conditions listed in the prospectus.
