The Maria V Howard Arts Center

2025 Handcrafted Juried Art Exhibition

The show runs January 31-May 4, 2025 with an artist reception recognizing artists and awards presented on Sunday, February 9, 2-4 p.m. The winners are announced during the reception at @2:30 p.m.
Our 26th Annual Exhibition is juried by artist, Jessica Dupuis. Jessica Dupuis received her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BFA with a concentration in ceramics and print media from Alfred University. Dupuis exhibits her work regionally and nationally. She has been a resident artist at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and Women’s Studio Workshop as well as a recipient of the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award and an Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham Arts Council. She is an Associate Professor of Art – Ceramics & A.D. Gallery Director at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. To find out more about the juror, visit her website at jessicadupuis.com

The exhibit is open to all US artists ages 18 or older working in ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, paper, or any combination of craft medias. The following prizes are awarded: $1000 Acquisition Award, $300 First Place, $200 Second Place, and $100 Third Place.

 

Mike’s Metal Madness


Featured Artist: Mike Winstead

The show runs January 31-May 4, 2025, with an artist reception recognizing the artist on Sunday, February 9, 2-4 p.m.

This exhibit will feature the works of self-taught visual artist, Mike Winstead. The artist uses repurposed metals and other materials to create beautiful works of sculpture. He was also Best in Show winner of our 2023 Juried National Art Exhibit and his piece, Steam Locomotive is now part of the Maria V. Howard Arts Center Permanent Collection. He also has works in private collections throughout Eastern North Carolina.

Sculpture Salmagundi XXVIII November 2024-September 2025

Reception: Sunday, February 9, 2-4 p.m. Announcement of Winner, 2:30 p.m.

The Sculpture Salmagundi (meaning an eclectic mixture of people, ideas, or objects) is a national juried exhibition hosted by the Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department through the Maria V. Howard Arts Center each year. Our juror for the exhibit is sculptor, Jim Gallucci. To find out more about he juror, visit his website at jimgalluccisculptor.com

Jim Gallucci, a graduate of LeMoyne College (BA, English 1973) and Syracuse University (BFA, Art 1974 and MFA, Sculpture 1976), has been a sculptor for over 30 years. He has worked as an art instructor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He was also an Exhibit Designer for the North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro, NC. Gallucci is a national and international artist with work in a number of permanent collections including the Maria V. Howard Permanent Collection.

This year’s Sculpture Salmagundi featured artists are Thomas Happel, Hanna Jubran, Jordan Parah, Jonathan Bowling, Glenn Zweygardt, Lee Badger, TJ Christiansen, Sam Spiczka, John Ross, Jessica Bradsher, Ethan Morrow, Bob Doster, Vandorn Hinnant, and Marc Chicoine.

These and other permanent works of art are on display throughout the City of Rocky Mount. For more information, contact the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences. Guided tours are available through the Imperial Centre as well as an app, Otocast which provides visitors with gps coordinates and recordings of the artists speaking about their work. Permanent Collection

The Arts Center Permanent Collection consists of 500+ works by artists primarily from North Carolina and the southeast. The collection includes key regional artists such as Frances Speight, Sarah Blakeslee, Ben Owen, Sr., Mark Hewitt, Cynthia Bringle, Billie Ruth Sudduth, Hobson Pittman and Louis Orr. Acquisitions are funded through the City of Rocky Mount and private donations.
